1. Do you need to think about safety when selecting clothing for your baby?

Absolutely. For instance, jackets with drawstrings should be avoided. If your baby pulls them, they may cause choking. Buttons and ribbons should be avoided for very young babies. Be sure to check out product recalls before purchasing clothing for your baby. Also, be sure to look for fire retardant clothing whenever possible.

2. What clothing pieces should you have when bringing your baby home from the hospital?

All parents should have several t-shirts, onesies, baby socks, hats, sweaters, burping clothes (bibs), and wash clothes. A few regular outfits are also ideal to have. You also will not want to forget about receiving blankets, hooded towels, and - of course - diapers!

3. What type of laundry detergent should you use to wash baby clothing?

Generally, it is a good idea to use a laundry detergent that is designed for babies. The ingredients used in these detergents tend to be less harsh, which means that they will not cause your baby’s skin so much irritation. That said, most find that the only time it is really necessary to use this type of detergent is if their baby has very sensitive skin or a skin condition, such as eczema.

4. There are so many baby jeans colors available to choose from. What is best?

Dark wash baby jeans are the best option. The reason? Babies are prone to having accidents. While light jeans may be just as attractive, dark jeans do a much better job at hiding any stains that the baby may have.

5. Why should you consider choosing organic baby clothing?

There are chemicals, including pesticides and herbicides, used during the production of non-organically grown cotton. It is possible that these chemicals may be harmful to your child, and it is likely that they will be absorbed by the skin. Children with allergies also may become irritated by the chemicals. Organic baby clothing does not contain these chemicals and, thus, is much safer for babies.

6. Should baby clothing be loose or snug fitting?

Always try to opt for clothing that is loose fitting for your baby. This will allow for any perspiration to be released, rather than it clinging to the skin and causing skin conditions, rashes, and irritation. It is especially important to choose loose fitting clothing for your baby during the summer.

7. What should baby clothing materials feel like?

It is important to choose baby clothes that are not only loose fitting, but soft as well. Cotton is recommended as the best material for babies, but try to opt for organic whenever possible. The most important thing is to make sure that the baby clothing is not rough and does not cling too tightly to your child’s skin.

8. How do you choose easy accessible baby clothes?

Baby clothes should open up easily in the front, so that diapers can be changed. Also, avoid choosing baby clothing that have too many buttons or zippers in areas which may make changing diapers more difficult. Be sure to consider practicality before appearance when it comes to selecting attire for your baby.

9. Why is it best to avoid designer baby clothing sometimes?

Since babies do have accidents which can cause stains, it is a much better idea to dress your child in cheaper baby clothing whenever possible. Designer baby clothing can then be worn on special occasions, such as holidays, professional photographs, and birthdays.

10. Should baby clothing be the right size for your baby?

Most babies grow fairly quickly. What this means is that you will want to think about purchasing baby clothes that are slightly bigger than your baby. This will also allow room for your baby to fit if the clothes happen to shrink when you wash them, which is very common with cotton.  

11. How do you find baby clothing that is easy to take care of?

Be sure to check out labels or, when shopping online, look for washing instructions. Make sure that the clothing is machine washable, and also look for whether special detergents or other cleaning products should or should not be used. Although it is very rare to find baby clothing which needs to be dry cleaned, it is possible.  

12. Why does your child need playwear clothing?

When babies play, they love to be rough. This often means that they will scoot across the floor or get into other situations where their clothes may be put in danger. Playwear should be especially durable and should be dark enough to hide any stains that may occur.

13. What should baby sleepwear be like?

Baby sleepwear does not need to be as stain resistant or durable as baby daywear. It should be just as comfortable, however. Keep in mind that baby sleepwear will vary according to the region that you live in. If the climate is colder, heavier material should be used, but if the temperatures are a lot hotter, then the same clothing that is worn during the day can usually be used at nighttime.

14. How heavy should baby pants be?

Keep in mind that the weight of baby pants determines the overall quality. The heavier that pants are, the better they will be for baby. However, babies who live in warmer climates will benefit from having lightweight baby pants as well. Your baby will not want to be too hot in the pants that you select.

15. Why is it important to own onesies?

Onesies are a saving grace for most parents because they make changing diapers so much easier. They come in both long and short sleeves, and can be worn with pants and heavier shirts or sweaters. If you live in a warmer climate, onesies can often make great sleepwear pieces.

16. How heavy should a baby’s socks be?

The weight of socks should vary according to season or the region that you live in. Hotter temperatures call for lighter socks, just as heavier socks should be worn during cooler times of the year. Although socks should be warm enough to keep a baby’s feet warm, they should also not cause him to sweat.

17. When should you buy baby clothing?

Babies grow fairly quickly. This is one of the main reasons that you will not want to purchase baby clothing too far in advance. A few months before the season starts is ideal. When creating a baby registry or buying baby clothing before the baby is born, be sure to consider when the baby’s expected birth date is.

18. I don’t want to dress my baby boy in blue. Do you have any other suggestions?

Babies can wear almost any color of the rainbow and still look adorable! Although it is likely that you probably will incorporate a few blue outfits into your baby boy’s layette because it is such a popular color for boys, there are certainly other options. Forest green, red, brown, yellow, and red are all color options to consider.

19. What if an article of baby clothing says it is “pre-shrunk”? Do you still need to choose a bigger size?

Yes. In this situation, slightly bigger is still better. It is possible that the clothing may still shrink when you wash it, especially if it is cotton. Otherwise, it is still a good idea to allow room for growth.

20. Does my baby need mittens or gloves?

If you live in an area where there is any type of winter at all, then absolutely. When choosing mittens or gloves, it is important to make sure that there are no “hanging threads.” Your baby will become very frustrated and irritated if his fingers become trapped.
